What is a DAQ and what is it used for?

At its core, a DAQ is a type of hardware that is used to interface between a variety of digital or analog signals from a sensor to a PC. Some of the first DAQ systems were built in the 1960s by IBM to record scientific data for agencies like NASA and translate it to the computers of the era, which required extensive and specific programming. These machines could take up a full room and are a far cry from the types of data acquisition devices that we see today. As the hardware evolved, separate industrial DAQs started to be used for quality testing and maintenance in the form of breakout boxes and other acquisition hardware for electronic I/O testing.

Despite the advancements in design and functionality, DAQs are still a necessary daily tool for many industrial applications, which require the collection and processing of thousands of different sensor data with hundreds of communication protocols read by individual channels. NodeQ enables the continued evolution of data acquisition technology by combining hardware and adaptable software, making it possible to collect, send, and coordinate data at the edge.

SDT has a long history of working with manufacturers and meeting the needs of Industry 4.0. As factories get more digitized, the sensor and data collection requirements continue to increase. A single facility can contain tens of thousands of different sensors, which transmit terabytes of data on a regular basis. The only way to manage these increasing network workloads is to contain more information on-site. NodeQ’s ability to combine intelligent data processing with multiple input connectivity allows synchronized multi-measurement data to be structured and processed at the edge, with only relevant data being sent to the cloud.

NodeQ features a standard 35mm DIN rail mount for easy installation anywhere. Mount directly on your on-site DIN rail rack without additional installation costs.

NodeQ is built for production scalability. Every module is based on one I/O standard and can be switched out or added to have the right number of I/O channels for customer applications.



The average data acquisition device only supports serial communication or internal IP communication, preventing remote access of data by factory, production, or plant managers. Data must be collected by directly connecting RS-232C or Ethernet to an industrial PLC. Without the protocols necessary for direct communication to the cloud, it is impossible to automatically transmit, store, and analyze acquired data. To solve this inefficiency, SDT developed NodeQ and opened a new chapter in on-site data collection.

NodeQ is designed first for compatibility with your existing equipment. NodeQ helps build a manufacturing process tailored to your industrial environment, independent from equipment providers. This library introduces a revolutionary change to the production floor by eliminating a huge amount of manual work. The moment NodeQ is connected to a sensor, it automatically detects which manufacturer's sensor it is and inputs data to the software linked with NodeQ. No more manual work and coding for connections. And to reflect the ever-evolving sensor ecosystem, SDT provides frequent FOTA (firmware over the air) updates.

Timing and Latency

Achieve real-time device orchestration and automation of all equipment on site. NodeQ's greatest advantage is automatically recognizing and synchronizing the internal hardware clock of any NodeQ modules originally installed or added later, enabling accurate time management and ensuring no production delays at launch, even in a large production environment. SDT is proud to support the open-source community with IO-Link embedded software for NodeQ. IO-Link is the first international I/O standard for connecting sensors and actuators with bi-directional, point-to-point communication. Unlike conventional I/O, IO-Link has the great advantage of integrating the device into virtually any fieldbus or automation system. NodeQ includes IO-Link for bi-directional communication that allows quick setup and installation diagnostics.


NodeQ and BlokWorks

NodeQ supports SDT Cloud integration through the on-board SDT SoM with embedded connectivity software that enables precision orchestration. SDT hardware works in conjunction with SDT Cloud to perform continuous MLOps at industrial sites. Data collected via NodeQ is classified, processed, and transmitted to SDT Cloud to provide meaningful equipment information to operators at any location.
